Loi Krathong Festival

Every year Loi Krathong is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth month by the lunar calendar, usually in November. It is a favorite and very beautiful holiday, which is very revered by the locals and attracts many tourists from all over the world.

"Loy" means "to swim," and "krathong" is a tiny boat, traditionally made from banana leaves and decorated with flowers, lit candles and flavored chopsticks. It is believed that this ritual was originally dedicated to the Brahmin goddess Ganga, but over time it was adapted to Buddhist traditions.

On the night of the full moon, millions of Thais and tourists are allowed to go into the waters of a river, canal, lake, pond or sea. The lighted candle symbolizes the light of the Buddha's teaching, and the ritual itself is a kind of absolution, a cleansing of offenses and bad thoughts, an opportunity to start life from a white leaf. For the spirits of water in the boat have to put a coin for good luck.
